Chelmsford Gets In The Olympic Spirit
It seemed a long time coming, but finally the newly dubbed City of Chelmsford, my hometown, could join in with the Olympic countdown. I started seeing bunting and flags appear early on, so the excitement was definitely building!
A week later the official Olympic celebrations came to town, and reports are that thousands enjoyed the evening celebrations at Hylands Park, and the torch relay. I didn’t manage to catch either of those, but wanting to capture some Olympic spirit, I did get my picture taken with Olympic Mascots Wenlock and Mandeville. It had to be done, even though most of the people queuing were a lot younger than me! Then I took a trip along to High Chelmer, where gymnasts Olympia put on a stunning display of tumbling, balancing, and acrobatics. If you missed them you definitely missed out! Some days you can’t escape humour for long though, as the famous dancing grannies from our Street Theatre event hurtled through the mall on their trollies. Many giggles were had, as one of the Grannies spotted my Nan sitting with me, and asked if she’d like a go! All in a day’s fun in Chelmsford! Perhaps someone can have a word with the weather gods and send the UK some sunshine in time for the Olympics though!
Check out some more photos from the day on our photo album.
