Stealing Signs: Roman House (Single Review)
If you were to look for a band that perfectly illustrates young, accessible, alternative rock, then Stealing Signs could well fit the bill. The South Woodham Ferrers based band is starting to make a name for themselves lately, winning airplay on Xfm and BBC Radio 1, and gigging all over the South East. They release their new single ‘Roman House’ on April 23rd, but with a video already up online, I couldn’t resist giving it a look/listen for the latest Arts Blurb review.
The song is a smooth and flowing indie/rock mix, and one which I think will be accessible and appealing to a broad audience. The guitar riffs have a quite cool, chilled out vibe which I liked, while some of the repeated lyrics are styled so the audience will relate to them in different ways, as they stick in the mind. The one thing I found a little bit predictable was the vocal style and tone, which was quite typical of the genre. There were so no surprises there, but perhaps a few hints of what more they could offer in terms of vocal arrangements.
I don’t envy them the task of filming the video for Roman House though, as news has reached me that it was shot in one take, after 12 solid hours of rehearsal. Shooting in one take produced interesting results though, as the band played on the lyrical content of the song, filming many “nothing fits in our home” scenes in what looked like uni halls. Look out for the enthusiastic drummer who found himself in the ladies loos.
All in all, it was an easy listen, and I enjoyed seeing what they did with a one-take video. The song may not stand out as much as it could have done in some areas, but it still has an appealing vibe to it, and I think I hit the repeat button a good few times!
Roman House is available now for pre-order on I-Tunes and Amazon. The single is officially released on April 23rd. Check out the band on Facebook or Soundcloud.
